Phelps wins 200m individual medley for 22nd gold

Putting aside the disconcerting lime-like waters at the aquatics center, the focus of the Rio Games turned toward the emerald green fairways of the Olympic Golf Course on Thursday.

The officers from Brazil’s national security force who were sent to Rio for the Olympics relied on a Global Positioning System device to navigate unfamiliar streets Wednesday afternoon, but they took a wrong turn off a highway leading to Rio’s worldwide airport. The swimming pool rivalry between the two has been going on for 13 years, according to the Associated Press. While Phelps was earning that trio of golds, Lochte won two silvers and a bronze. Only four other Olympians – Danish sailor Paul Elvstrom and USA track and field athletes Ray Ewry, Al Oerter and Carl Lewis – can claim a four-peat in an individual event.

Michael Phelps is confident about his record.

Phelps’ proficiency is undeniable as the most decorated Olympian in history.

Whether you want to watch Phelps and Lochte go for gold or want to catch something else, NBC Sports will have you covered with a live stream of it all. He was aiming to get into the second semifinal, which would have given him some extra recovery time after the 200 IM final. He stopped the clock at one minute, 54.66 seconds, off Ryan Lochte’s world record of 1:54.00.

But once again, Phelps was a few steps ahead.

The individual medley is a strength for both swimmers. He’s the toughest competitor and racer I’ve ever had to go up against. He won’t give up and that’s awesome.

“When you put things in perspective, if a disappointing swim meet is the worst thing that happens to me in my life, then I’m having a good life”, Franklin said. It wasn’t even Lochte directly behind him. Comparatively, Lochte stands 6 ft 2 in (1.88 m) and weighs 194 lb (88 kg). They are two of the great swimmers.

“Of course I wanted gold like any other athlete, especially at the Olympics, and it was so close”, Efimova said. On the other hand, Lochte has some handicap because he is relatively shorter and heavier on the water. Lochte is 32. Phelps is 31. But as the 1997 Ethan Hawke science fiction thriller Gattaca shows, genetic or physical superiority does not always make the best man win. And there probably will be no more for Lochte. Lochte, meanwhile, would probably have a gold medal of his own in the 200-meter individual medley if it wasn’t for Phelps.

Phelps is also a brand new father who dotes on his 3-month-old son, Boomer, with fiancee Nicole Johnson, according to ET.
