A wave of bomb blasts targeting tourist resorts in Thailand were carried out in four locations, killing at least four people and more than 30 have been injured.

Two people were killed and more than 20 were wounded, many seriously, in the seaside resort of Hua Hin in two bomb attacks on Friday and two on Thursday.

In Surat Thani, one person was killed.

At least four people died in Thailand after 11 bombings rocked five different provinces, authorities said Friday.

Sirasit Teimtontanin, a manager at City Beach Resort in Hua Hin, said one of Friday’s explosions went off about 300 meters from the front door.

The bombs on Thursday were set off by remote control, half an hour apart, according to Police General Sithichai Srisopacharoenrath, the superintendent of police in Hua Hin, and his deputy, Lieutenant General Samer Yousamran.

Hua Hin’s district chief, Sutthipong Klai-udom, said several of the bombs were detonated by mobile phone.

The bombings on Thursday and Friday came at a sensitive time in Thailand, with this weekend marking Queen Sirikit’s 84th birthday.

One person suffered minor injuries in the Phuket incident, Theerapol told CNN.

A local female street vendor was killed in the attack and scores of others injured, including several foreigners.

Even as police searched for suspects and fears of more bombs continued, locals said the explosions will be a blow to tourism, a critical source of income.

Trang is on the fringes of Thailand’s deep south, where a low-level Muslim separatist insurgency had killed more than 5,000 people since 2004.

Reports of blasts from across the southern half of Thailand are continuing.

The attacks also occur less than a week after a junta-backed constitution was approved by a referendum, increasing military influence in the political process following a 2014 coup.

But the choice of Hua Hin as a major target is also symbolic, the BBC’s correspondent says, being known as a royal city and the king’s favoured residence outside Bangkok.

There have been further reports of bombings 200 kilometers north at a marketplace in Takua Pa of the Phang Nga province. I saw eight to ten people injured, on the floor.

Prime Minster Prayuth Chan-ocha called on Thai citizens to “band together and stay strong”, according to the wire service. One of those was near a bar in a narrow alley in the town late on Thursday, killing one Thai woman and wounding 21 people, Krisana said.

Tourism suffered a temporary hit after an explosion tore through a Bangkok shrine almost a year ago, killing 20 people who were mostly visitors from other Asian countries. It was unclear if it was related to the Hua Hin blasts. The city is home to many worldwide hotel chains, including the Marriott, Hilton and Hyatt.
