Police believe a crime is involved, although they have provided no further details why.

There was no immediate word on what may have caused the crash.

Two witnesses who spoke to a MyKawartha.com freelancer say they arrived on the scene just after the crash and thought a tractor-trailer had overturned on the road.

It’s believed the man was the only person aboard the small Piper aircraft.

Paramedics responded to the scene and attempted to resuscitate the pilot but pronounced him dead a short time later.

“I was just in utter shock that a plane had crashed”, she said.

The plane was registered to a Newmarket man, according to Transport Canada records.

York Regional Police say the plane was stolen from Markham Airport, but did not say when. Access to businesses on Lansdowne Street between Monaghan and Erskine will only be possible via adjacent streets.
