‘The Expendables’ actor Dolph Lundgren cast as new villain; Season 5 plot

The massive TCA press tour panel for all four CW DC shows broke word, albeit only to specify that the Rocky IV star would appear as a flashback big bad in Russian Federation (we’d guess Kovar).

We’ve known for some time the likelihood that Arrow would end its flashback cycle altogether with Season 5, but however much flack the format gets, they’re going out with bang.

Lundgren’s character was actually mentioned toward the end of season 4, when Taiana referred to the Russian villain Kovar.

Lundgren slips in under the line, as Executive Producer Marc Guggenheim confirmed this will mark the final season for flashbacks.

Arrow returns to The CW for its fifth season this October, and the network has released an official synopsis, which teases what’s in store for the newly-appointed Mayor of Star City, Oliver Queen; check it out here… According to executive producer Wendy Mericle, Lundgren’s role as the new Big Bad is tied up to Oliver’s flashback scenes in Russian Federation. “Sort of the flashback story in the first half of the year is going to involve Oliver’s introduction into the Bratva”.

But Mericle has promised a wondrous fight between Lundgren and Oliver Queen in one episode of the season. With Diggle back in the military and Thea adamant about hanging up her hood as Speedy, Team Green Arrow is down to just Oliver and Felicity – but they’re no longer the only vigilantes in town.

The arc should fill in some lingering gaps that have been eluded to throughout the series, and pitting Stephen Amell against someone as imposing as Lundgren should be dynamite on-screen. Meanwhile, the arrival of Oliver’s new foe on “Arrow” Season 5 will force him to confront questions about his own legacy as a mayor and as the Green Arrow.
