The Teen Choice Awards – better known for passing out its trademark surfboard trophies to pop stars than for teaching audiences about public policy – tackled two serious social issues Sunday night.

Since politics is on just about everyone’s minds these days the Teen Choice Awards made a decision to get in on the campaign action by holding an election decided by those who are not actually old enough to vote yet.

The Teen Choice Awards featured no mention of late singer Christina Grimmie which has left fans fuming, claiming the show “exploited” her death.

Well, sort of. In order to encourage young people to vote, Cena dressed like Hillary Clinton and Victoria Justice dressed like Donald Trump and it was. scary.

The 39-year-old wrestler showed up in a pink suit and blonde wig, while the “Victorious” lead star donned a navy suit and a red tie.

And Ne-Yo also took a stand against gun violence by performing a moving rendition of Marvin Gaye’s 1971 classic, “What’s Going On”.

While the majority of the audience for the Teen Choice Awards can not vote in the 2016 presidential election, they did make their voices heard.

In the weeks leading up to the Fox awards show, Grimmie’s name and image were used to promote the event, causing fans to believe the singer, who was nominated for Choice Music Web Star, would be acknowledged during the show. You will fall down. Then, Timberlake got a little more personal, “I grew up in Millington, Tennessee, just outside of Memphis, where I was blessed to be raised by parents and a family that who taught me some big lessons. Why have the award up if you’re not going to announce it?” a user tweeted. The artist left fans with a nice message, encouraging teens to “be the greatest generation yet”.
