As the US burst out to a 24-7 lead seven minutes into the first quarter, it looked like the United States would cruise to yet another Olympic rout.
Kyrie Irving led the Americans with 15 points.
At times, it looked the US did come to play.
Milos Teodosic was brilliant as his three-point potency opened up a penetration and kick opportunities all over the floor. They gave the ball away five times in the quarter. Bogdan Bodanovi, who missed the potential tying 3-pointer, scores seven points. Jokic and Miroslav Raduljica helmed a front line that took it to the Americans. Every U.S. run was halted with a Serbian timeout or foul, followed by a big basket from Serbia.
For the second straight game, the US men’s basketball was tested to the final minute.
Once again, a disciplined offensive team – Serbia this time – gave the hyped US defense trouble. If Mike Krzyzewski wants to bring Thompson off the bench to alleviate his struggles, starting Butler in place of George may be a better option even if it sacrifices early three point looks.
Carmelo Anthony, Paul George, and Kevin Durant each scored 12 points to have a balance offensive attacks and distributions while DeAndre Jordan added 13 points coming from the bench.
In an uninspired performance, the USA defeated Serbia 94-91 Friday for its 21st consecutive Olympic victory and 49th consecutive worldwide victory. For the best player in the tournament, Durant’s presence felt absent for stretches for the second game in a row.
Team USA plays Team France on Sunday to close out Group A. Depending on the outcome of Team France’s game tonight against Team Venezuela, the theoretical possibility of a three-way tie atop Group A still exists.

As the competition improves and the games become more significant, it seems inevitable that Team USA will rediscover its anger and deliver a few minutes or a quarter when it blitzes opponents into submission. They’ll play China in their final game of the group phase.
