There are also, of course, illegitimate methods for procuring such content and whilst Periscope doesn’t actively share copyrighted material directly, it’s certainly become a facilitator for the stuff. The figure is measured as “time watched” which is defined as the aggregate amount of time that people spend watching live broadcasts on iOS & Android. Success for the audience (viewers who are watching and participating in a Periscope) means more high quality broadcasts in their feeds that they want to watch and participate in.

Of the 1391 takedown notices Twitter has been dealt as a result of Periscope’s misgivings, the company has been able to remove 71 per cent of the offending material thus far.

Neither company has revealed how many users actually use its streaming services. We need to get lives, y’all. And Meerkat did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding how many accounts it has registered.

Beykpour is happy with Twitter’s support of the service.

According to a blog post by the team on Wednesday, the service hit that milestone on August 2 after only four months of service.

“There’s no better metric that illustrates whether people like and are engaged with using Periscope”, Beykpour said.

And apparently the Periscope team is more focused on a different metric: total time watched per day.

Periscope says that over 40 years of video is being watched every day – and that doesn’t include periscope.tv viewing.

Twitter has spent a lot of time talking up Periscope, the livestreaming app it bought back in January. Even Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel recently said that his team internally looks at “hourly active users” as a more accurate proxy of user engagement.

Livestreaming appears to be growing quickly among consumers
