China broke its own world record in the semifinals, beating Spain with a time of 31.928 seconds, before knocking off the Russians to improve on the silver won at the London Games.

New Zealand’s team sprint silver medalist Eddie Dawkins said the fast times were not surprising.

Australia’s first cycling medal was a bronze in the 1km time trial from Dunc Gray back at the Amsterdam Games in 1928.

The time was much quicker than their main opposition for gold, the American team of Sarah Hammer, Kelly Catlin, Chloe Dygert and Jennifer Valente, who raced round the track in 4:02.339.

“This is something I’ll be proud of the rest of my life, and what Bradley’s done to win five (gold medals) is out of this world”, Doull said.

One event, one gold medal for the nation which won seven out of 10 track titles in Beijing and London.

Great Britain and New Zealand competed for the gold medal.

They finished in 3:51.943. To be part of one of the best games of the Olympics is a great feeling.

The first round and final take place on Friday’s second day of action, where Wiggins is sure to be the focus.

He had a dispute with commissaires on Thursday ahead of the qualification ride, when officials summoned him to measure his height.
