Following a six-month forced hiatus without pay from NBC News, news anchor and television personality Brian Williams is due to return on-air in mid-September.

Williams had been suspended from NBC News for six months following his February admission that he had “misremembered” his own experiences covering the 2013 invasion of Iraq as part of a report about a war veteran.

After an extensive review confirmed that many of Williams’ field reporting anecdotes were inaccurate, the newsman took a position as MSNBC’s anchor of breaking news and special reports.

At the time, some inside NBC News saw the move as evidence that Williams – then the anchor and managing editor of the network’s flagship broadcast, “Nightly News” – had too much power. The truth came to light after members of the military pointed out the mistake.

MSNBC hasn’t announced a start date for Williams. An internal investigation subsequently launched by NBC News found other instances of embellishment during Williams’ career at NBC News. Some observers doubted that Williams would ever return to NBC.

In an interview with the Today show in June, Williams apologized for his actions and said he never intended to deceive the public. Williams’ replacement, Lester Holt, will likely continue to helm “Nightly News“.

“This was clearly ego driven, the desire to better my role in a story I was already in”, Williams said.
