Rio 2016: Silver for Phelps as Schooling makes history

Michael Phelps tasted defeat in a final for the first time at Rio 2016 as Singapore’s Joseph Schooling produced a superb performance to win gold in the men’s 100 metre butterfly on Friday. He tied with Chad le Clos.

The British team of Chris Walker-Hebborn, Adam Peaty, James Guy and Duncan Scott won the first heat in 3 minutes 30.47 seconds, with Peaty making his first appearance since winning gold in the 100m breaststroke on Sunday. American Tom Shields came in seventh.

Phelps did best le Clos in the 200-meter butterfly-an event in which the South African failed to medal.

The Silver won by Phelps is his 27th medal overall, with 22 Gold medals already won in his career.

Friday’s medal finals are the Women’s 200m Backstroke, the Men’s 100m Butterfly, the Women’s 800m Freestyle and the Men’s 50m Freestyle.

Phelps was sixth at the turn and Schooling – nearly exactly a decade younger than the 31-year-old American – wouldn’t let him pull off one of his patented comebacks on the return lap. He’s scheduled to swim in the 4×100-meter medley relay, in which he helped the U.S.to gold in 2012.
