Jets lose star Smith to ‘sucker punch’ broken jaw
The incident occurred in the Jets’ locker room during their training camp as the pair argued over a $600 (£385) debt that the 24-year owed to Enemkpali.

Instead of video of the quarterback taking a hit off the field from Geno’s teammate, IK Enemkpali, in the locker room, news reports explaining the incident are starting to fill YouTube. Smith, however, did not end up attending after a person close to him was killed in a motorcycle accident. The blow resulted in multiple breaks in Smith’s jaw, which could make him a candidate for injured reserve with a return designation.
So what kept Geno from paying up?
Smith will miss six to 10 weeks with a broken jaw, Jets coach Todd Bowles announced Tuesday.
“It had nothing to do with football”, Bowles said.
Smith posted an all caps message to Instagram, proclaiming, “ILL BE BACK”.
“I don’t know what happened”, Carter said, “but for me, it’s a lack of leadership on Geno Smith’s part that he would put himself in harm’s way to get sucker punched”.
The former first-round pick out of West Virginia will require surgery on his jaw, effectively ending the Jets’ competition for their starting quarterback job. Something very childish. He got cold cocked, sucker punched whatever you want to call it, in the jaw.
Though the Jets signed veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick in the offseason, Smith was named the Jets’ starter by offensive coordinator Chan Gailey this past May.
The Jets were already missing their Pro Bowl defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson for the Dolphins clash due to a four-game suspension he picked up last month for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. I deeply regret and apologise for my actions.

“I’ll let them tell you”, Bowles said. He was suspended in 2011 while attending Louisiana Tech following an arrest for punching an off-duty police officer. He earned all-conference honors in 2012 and 2013 before the Jets selected him in the sixth round of the 2014 draft. Bowles said the team hasn’t decided yet if it will add another quarterback.
