Russian Federation Warns It’s Going To Block Reddit

“It is conceivable that somebody became relaxed due to the August vacation season, but it’s not a good reason to risk one’s readers,” the watchdog said in a statement published on a Russian social network, as reported by Russia Today.

The Russian government has said it’s considering a nation-wide block on the social website Reddit over concerns about easily accessible information on growing and acquiring drugs.

The post doesn’t actually specify which thread had particularly caused a problem, but finding advice on how to grow drugs isn’t hard to come by on Reddit.

Roskomnadzor, the Kremlin’s “Federal Service for Supervision within the Sphere of Telecom Info Applied sciences and Mass Communications”, (the Russian equal of Fb) that it has requested Reddit to take away the thread in query to no avail.

The popular link-sharing site has been contacted by Russia’s internet watchdog, Roskomnadzor, and instructed to remove the specific thread.

This decision was made after Russia’s Federal Drug Control Service decided that Reddit content was promoting talks of these substances – in communities that were most likely under subreddits r/trees and r/shrooms.

Russian Federation already blocks a long list of sites, including those of the Jehovah’s Witnesses church and the Internet Wayback machine, which archives the internet, and has issued similar threats to YouTube.

It said: “Those who have contacts with the administration ask them to check their email for letters from Roskomnadzor, otherwise, due to technological features, many operators may block the whole site”.

A site belonging to chess champion and President Vladimir Putin critic Garry Kasparov has also been blacklisted.
