Dahlkvist then stepped up, but Solo called a timeout, hoping to spook the Swede.

Goalkeeper Hope Solo kicks the ball during the USA women’s soccer team’s quarterfinal match against Sweden during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at the Mane Garrincha Stadium in Brasilia.
The controversial US goalkeeper and her Women’s World Cup champion teammates are heading home earlier than anyone expected after being eliminated in the quarterfinals on Friday.
The controversial goalie for the USA women’s soccer team unleashed a sore-loser rant for the ages after the Americans were eliminated by Sweden in the Olympic quarterfinals on Friday. “The better team did not win”. “I strongly and firmly believe that”. Nevertheless, I am so proud of the way we played tonight, our fight, our heart and the skill we showed. “You saw us give everything we had today”, she told reporters.
Throughout her long and occasionally controversial career with the United States women’s soccer team, Hope Solo has developed a reputation for not holding back with her opinions.
“What she did was an act of panic”, said Swedish ‘keeper Hedvig Lindahl of Solo’s time-wasting tactics before the final penalty. “They didn’t want to pass the ball”.
She had little to do against Sweden as the United States struggled to break down their opponents, who tried to hit them on the break.
So Sundhage, a Swede, knew how to approach the talented American squad, which still has numerous same players from four years ago, including Solo. “Yeah, I mean it’s going to hurt”, Lloyd said. I think you saw American heart.
“They played more attacking football than we did”.
“I don’t give a crap”, Sundhage said, according to Swedish website Sportsbladet.
The three-time defending champion United States had been the clear favorites in Brazil to become the first team to win an Olympic gold following a Women’s World Cup title.
Following Solo’s verbal flamethrowers Friday, Sports Illustrated soccer writer Grant Wahl tracked her down to seek clarification on the “coward” comments. “And we’re going home”, Solo said.

There were many people who were not happy with Solo’s comments, both in the United States and overseas. She dug a much deeper hole for herself Friday by insulting the Swedish team that had just bounced the heavily favored Americans from the tournament in a penalty shootout. She’s the best goalkeeper in the world, so why wouldn’t you try to make her happy?

A few hours after the match, Solo posted on Twitter and seemed to feel some remorse, but she stopped short of apologizing. Alex Morgan netted the equalizer in the 78th and the match went to extra time.
