After winning his fifth medal at the Rio Olympics, Michael Phelps dismissed the idea of a participation in 2020 and ended his individual Olympic career.

The American, who had won four finals in Rio to take his record tally to a staggering 22 golds, clocked 51.14, along with fierce rivals le Clos and Cseh.

“They did the same thing in London”.

“If I cry in front of all of you all, it’s because I have nothing to be ashamed of”, he told reporters. And I’m standing by that.

The 24-year-old and Korotyshkin were not the only ones to have matching efforts in the British capital. “I’m happy with how things finished”. “I just don’t know if he can just stop”, his mother Debbie Phelps said in an NBC interview.

That meant winning back the men’s 200m butterfly title that Le Clos took from him four years ago, and he declared “mission achieved” on that last Wednesday.

American Michael Phelps shared the silver in a three-way tie in the 100-meter butterfly, making more history at the Rio Olympics.

Phelps qualified for the 100m butterfly finals in incredible fashion Thursday night, swimming in the semifinals a little more than a half hour after winning gold in the 200-meter individual medley.

But Phelps confirmed one last time at Friday’s post-match press conference that he would not be changing his mind this time. “I just wanted to push myself and see what I could do”.

“I’m ready to retire”, he said. I’m happy about it. “I’m ready to spend some time with Boomer and Nicole and watch the little dude grow”.

Noting that this was her last race in Rio, Ledecky added, “The Olympics is the pinnacle of our sport and I have to wait four more years to have that moment again so I wanted the last one to be special”.

“It felt faster than any event I had ever done before”, Ledecky said, “so I was pretty confident that I would be under that world record time”. “But I won’t be competing in Tokyo”. I said it a bunch before. But I’m not doing it.

In tonight’s race, and in many performances since the London Olympics, Ledecky has shown she’s intent on fulfilling that potential.
