Indians jump on Nationals late in 3-1 win

Bouncing back from some rough outings, Bauer outdueled Max Scherzer, and the Cleveland Indians beat the Washington Nationals 3-1 on Tuesday night.

Jose Ramirez went 2 for 4 with an RBI double in the seventh and an RBI single in the ninth.

In his previous five starts, Bauer had allowed 22 earned runs on 33 hits for an 8.37 ERA. Scherzer struck out 10 batters for his 10th double-digit strikeout game and the 46th of his career.

BOSTON – Rick Porcello continued to dominate at Fenway Park with eight solid innings, Matt Barnes cleaned up a mess created by closer Craig Kimbrel and Boston held on to beat NY. Francisco Lindor then punished a Gonzalez offering for a two-run shot, his 14th of the campaign. It was his first start since being demoted to the minors in May. Jason Kipnis has hit 121 times with 65 runs, 19 homers and 61 RBI.

Kris Bryant hit his 28th homer of the season for the Cubs, who noted their 70th win and are a season-best 29 games above a.500 winning percentage.

Indians pitcher Carlos Carrasco passed his USA citizenship test last week, which was cause for celebration.

It wouldn’t be until midway through the seventh when Francisco Lindor (because of course) punched a two-strike four-seam fastball back up the middle when the focus quickly move from Scherzer to the fact that Bauer was also holding the opposition scoreless, facing no more than five batters in an inning.

Elvis Araujo (2-1) pitched one inning for the victory.

The Indians and Nationals, leading their respective divisions, finished the season series by splitting four games.

Brandon Crawford, who became just the sixth player in major league history to crack seven hits in one game when he accomplished the feat on Monday, was not able to deliver an encore performance.

Arizona’s Zack Greinke returned from a side strain and pitcher the Diamondbacks to a 5-3 win at the New York Mets.

Werth was 2 for 3 and had three runs.

Giancarlo Stanton had the go-ahead RBI with a first-inning double that shattered his bat in half. They have a one-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.

Frazier untied it in the 10th by lining a first pitch offering from Kelvin Herrera over the left-field fence with Jose Abreu and Carlos Sanchez aboard for his 31st home run of the season, which is tied for the American League lead. And he didn’t give up a hit until Francisco Lindor singled with one out in the seventh.

PITTSBURGH – Gregory Polanco hit a tiebreaking homer and Chad Kuhl pitched six innings for the win after being called up from the minors as Pittsburgh defeated San Diego.

Kuhl (2-0) allowed two runs and five hits.

Washington had an answer for Cleveland’s tying run when they brought around three in the bottom of the second. Even after he exited, things didn’t get much better, as the lone run the Nationals scored came courtesy of a Jayson Werth solo homer off of recently acquired All-Star reliever Andrew Miller. The right-hander has a 1.00 ERA over his past three. Mauricio Cabrera pitched the ninth for his third save. He has just 13 RBIs over his 40-game streak – which is three short of Ryan Zimmerman’s Nationals record – but has 30 walks in that time.

Tomlin accepted blame for giving up hits, but manager Terry Francona would’ve liked to see Almonte make a couple of plays for his pitcher. He didn’t miss a beat one day later, going 4 for 4 with a run and an RBI. Jayson Werth’s homer cut the deficit to one before the Indians added a run in the ninth.

ST. LOUIS – Adam Duvall drove in two runs and Tyler Holt hit a tiebreaking double in the eighth inning that sent Cincinnati past St. Louis. “If it gets to that point, then it does because it will be something that has to happen”.

Duvall’s two-run single in the third broke a career-worst 0-for-18 skid.

Jake Smolinski reached base four times and scored what proved the decisive run in the third inning. He also scored twice and knocked in a run as Houston won for just second time in its last eight games. The lead came to 2-0.
