Phelps’ final race will come on Saturday night, when he’ll swim in the men’s 4×100 freestyle relay.
Asian champion Schooling, 21, completed a wire-to-wire victory to deny Phelps a fourth successive title in the event, winning in a Games record 50.39sec.
Had Phelps won, it would’ve been his fourth consecutive gold medal in the event, and his fifth in Rio. Here’s what he had to say.
Schooling, who trains and developed his technique in the United States and studies at the University of Texas, said: “I’m just ecstatic”.
But Friedman thought it was Lochte in front and that Phelps didn’t even win a medal.
As for Leonidas of Rhodes, the ancient Olympian was known for running rather than swimming.
“I had to work at it every day for many years”.

“I will just clarify that Ryan doesn’t know what he is talking about”, Phelps told reporters after the race. You’re telling me that wouldn’t be the most riveting race of the night?
“I think that is something that I’m excited for the whole sport to see really where everything goes from here”.
The 32-year-old Lochte, who said he would take a break from swimming now as he ponders his future, said he would have liked to have put up more of a challenge.
Lochte said he wants to train with Dwyer because he also does IM and that they can push each other in practice while having fun. “I was a little bummed about my performance, but I was happy for him to get a gold and get one for Team USA”.
