Holliday, Cardinals consider options for his broken thumb

Not only did the Cubs open a 13-game lead over the second-place Cardinals in the NL Central, St. Louis lost slugger Matt Holliday to a broken right thumb after he was hit by a pitch in the 10th inning.

The 10-game run is the Cubs’ longest since a 12-game streak from May 19-June 2, 2001.

Manager Joe Maddon gave outfielders Dexter Fowler and Jason Heyward a day off following a 4-3, 11-inning victory over the Cardinals on Thursday. From left to right, Contreras, Szczur and Soler started in the outfield instead.
