Katie Ledecky smashes record in 800m to take freestyle treble

Carlin became the first Welsh female swimmer for 80 years to win two medals in one Commonwealth Games in 2010, then became the first Welsh female swimmer to win a Commonwealth title in 40 years when she struck gold in Glasgow two years ago. She’s only the second woman to sweep the three longest freestyle races at the Olympics and the first one to do it since the 1968 Mexico City Games.

Says Ledecky: “I don’t know if anybody can ever match or carry the torch that Michael has carried for us the past 16 years really”.

“Just want to go and lay it all out there”. In those precious moments, Ledecky, 19, could ponder the enormousness of this accomplishment and the journey that brought her here – a notion that would leave her in tears minutes later. “We set those goals and we weren’t going to stop until we met them”.

Katie Ledecky continued her dominance in the women’s 800-meter freestyle in Rio on Friday, earning her second consecutive gold in the event with a world-record time of eight minutes, 4.79 seconds.

“I hit all my goals right on the nose this week”, she said.

Then she added “I also think we played a bunch of cowards”.

Jazz Carlin has won a second silver medal in the Rio Olympics after she took second in the women’s 800m freestyle.

Dirado swam down Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu, who starred at USC, in the final 25 meters of the 200 backstroke and touched the wall an instant before the race’s heavy favorite.

Ledecky was barely breathing hard. Rhode has three gold medals and six overall in her career. To call her a legend in the making is an understatement. “It brings back so many wonderful memories of when I was swimming, things that this old brain has forgotten”.

The most decorated athlete in Olympic history couldn’t pull off one of his patented comebacks in the 100-meter butterfly, easily held off by a swimmer a decade younger than Phelps.

Hosszu got off to a blistering start and led nearly the entire race.

“It’s what I had”, said Phelps, who has also won four golds at these Games and now has 27 Olympic medals.

Phelps shared the silver with two other longtime rivals, Chad le Clos of South Africa and Laszlo Cseh of Hungary.

“A three-way tie is pretty wild”, Phelps said.

For the first time since last weekend, Phelps had only one race to swim. Losing the last individual race of his career. And he needed the whole day to rest after a grueling Thursday slate that included his victory in the 200 individual medley and preliminary and semifinal swims in the 100 butterfly.

“Try to meet people that aren’t swimmers, because Stanford is a school that you’ll meet incredible people who will influence your life”, said Marsh, who formerly coached Auburn. “I’m numb right now”, – former National Football League star Michael Carter reflects on his daughter Michelle’s shock shot put triumph.

“Going in to the final round I definitely wasn’t as stressed as my family probably were at home”, – reigning Olympic long jump champion Greg Rutherford insists he had his emotions in check after two foul jumps left him in danger of missing Saturday’s final.

“I’m just so happy”.

Anthony Ervin of the United States has won the gold medal in the 50-meter freestyle at the Rio Olympics.

Kyrie Irving scored 15 points for the Americans, who didn’t lock up their 48th consecutive global victory until Bogdan Bogdanovic missed a 3-pointer from the left wing with two seconds left.

Though Phelps’ record in the 100 butterfly suggests utter dominance, he had won his previous three gold medals by a combined 0.28 of a second.
