Miami-Dade County has received $316,800 to date, more than any other county but no more than they had received last week.
“Typically this virus in of itself doesn’t lead to severe illness, the vast majority of people recover”, Packard said.
Request the temporary reassignment of local public health department or agency personnel who are funded through Public Health Service Act programs in Puerto Rico to assist in the Zika response.
Health Secretary Ana Rius said Friday there are 10,690 cases altogether, including 1,035 involving pregnant women.
Draining standing water, covering skin with long clothing, wearing mosquito repellant and keeping screens on doors and windows are some strategies for avoiding the proliferation of Zika.
With the 2016 Olympics Games in Rio de Janeiro, health officials worldwide have voiced concerns over a potential crisis, both in Brazil and when global athletes and tourists, who may be unknowingly infected, return home and possibly spread the virus.
On Thursday, the administration also shifted $81 million in funds to keep Zika vaccine research going.
According to the CDC, doctors have diagnosed Zika in 1,825 people in the continental USA, including 479 pregnant women.
The Zika virus is found in tropical locales with large mosquito populations. Several countries have taken the unusual step of advising their citizens to delay pregnancy until more is known about the virus and its impact on fetal development.
Can Zika be transmitted through sexual contact?
The first case of Zika virus has been reported in Monroe County, but officials say MI residents are at low risk for the viral infection.
On a more personal basis, “the declaration signals the urgency for pregnant women and children born to pregnant women with Zika – this action could encourage residents to take protective measures”, said Dr. Amesh Adalja, an expert on infectious disease and senior associate at the UPMC Center for Health Security. It also advised women living in areas where the virus is being transmitted to delay getting pregnant.
The man reportedly contracted the virus during a recent trip to Mexico. Zika can be passed through sex from a person who has Zika to his or her sex partners.
Zika has also been associated with other neurological disorders, including serious brain and spinal cord infections.

Earlier this month, the number of pregnant women in Puerto Rico who tested positive for the Zika virus reached 521, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
