The Cubs’ five home runs equaled a season high and added up to plenty of offensive support for starter Jake Arrieta, who yielded one run in 52/3 innings en route to his 14th victory of the season.

St. Louis Cardinals leftfielder Matt Holliday sustained a broken right thumb during Thursday night’s game against the Chicago Cubs and will be headed to the 15-day disabled list, the team announced.

Willson Contreras launched a three-run shot to cap a five-run second inning, and Javier Baez and Jorge Soler also went deep. Montgomery, who won his first game with Chicago after being acquired from Seattle last month, also hit Holliday with a 94 miles per hour fastball on a 1-1 count with nobody on and two out an inning earlier.

The Cubs knocked Adam Wainrwright out of the game after two innings and seven earned runs. Bryant struck out, but Rizzo worked a 3-1 count on Duke before taking “ball” four, making this walk-off Cubs win (+.345).

Stephen Piscotty and Jedd Gyorko homered for the Cardinals, who remain in a tight race for the second NL wild card despite dropping six of their last nine.

Opponents are hitting.070/.116/.283 with runners in scoring position and less than two outs against Lester at Wrigley this season.

Both the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs will be filling injury-created holes Friday when they continue their series at Wrigley Field. Bryant collected another double and RBI in the second when he brought home Szczur with a hit to the wall in left-center.

The Cubs offense struggled to figure out Martinez early.

Martinez allowed three runs and seven hits over six innings.

There’s only so much animosity the Cubs can generate when they wake up and the computers on FanGraphs and Baseball Prospectus give them a 99.8- or 99.9-percent chance to win the division.

Cubs leadoff hitter Matt Szczur doubled to open the first inning, he was hit by a pitch for the second inning, and then he homered in back-to-back at-bats against Williams in the sixth and seventh inning. Jabari Blash and Christian Bethancourt also homered early for the Padres.

Orioles 5, Giants 2: Mark Trumbo regained the major league lead with his 33rd home run, and Baltimore moved back into first place in the AL East with the victory. Their first hit came in the fourth inning off of an Anthony Rizzo triple to right and finished the game 3-18 with RISP.

Indians 13, Angels 3: Rajai Davis and Jose Ramirez each stole three bases to help Cleveland tie the franchise record with eight, and Brandon Guyton drove in five runs as the Indians handed Los Angeles its eighth straight loss.

WHITE SOX 4, MARLINS 2 Carlos Rodon pitched six innings to record his first victory since May as visiting Chicago beat Miami.

Randal Grichuk, called up from the minors before the game, tied it for St. Louis with a pinch-hit solo home run off Travis Wood in the seventh.
