The British started strongly, and led by almost a second at the first time check.
Brennan had led for most of the race, and although she was seriously challenged by New Zealand rower Emma Twiggs in the back half of the race, she maintained her stroke and her rating to come through to win.
The Olympic rower earned a silver medal Saturday in Rio de Janeiro during the women’s single sculls final.
She qualified for the “A Final” with a second-place finish in her semifinal race on Friday.
The 31-year-old world champion arrived in Rio as the hot gold medal favourite, unbeaten since 2014.
Drawn in lane three, Brennan lined up alongside scullers from Switzerland and the US, as well as Jingli Duan of China and Emma Twigg of New Zealand. Duan’s bronze is the first Olympic medal for China in this class. However, Twigg was not in contention here today, it was Brennan’s day.

In the final 500 metres, Stone began to chase down Brennan but she maintained her composure, and her lead, to claim the gold.
