Girls Injured, 1 Critically, in Fall from Tennessee Ferris Wheel

The other two patients are her sisters, one who was 10 and sustained injuries to her forearm, and a 6-year-old girl who was evaluated at the trauma center for a brain injury and is also in critical condition and more likely to remain that way for the time being. Investigators found that someone had disabled a safety mechanism that was there to prevent such an accident. While en route to the hospital following the incident, the girl had seizures, though she has responded to voices of family members in the ICU.

WVLT reports the mother of the two girls hurt when their gondola turned over posted an update on Facebook Tuesday evening.

At the North Carolina State Fair, five people were injured when an Italian-made ride called the Vortex unexpectedly restarted as they were trying to get off the ride, flinging them through the air and down to the steel deck below.

The incident happened on a state fair ride in eastern Tennessee earlier this week.. Macaroni was sentenced in February to five to 15 months in prison, though the judge suspended that to a month in jail. “We expect for them to be here and put on a good carnival act for the week of our fair”. Three other inspectors – the police captain didn’t say who they represent – are at the scene investigating. The state relies on private inspectors hired by operators and other states’ regulators to determine whether roller coasters, zip lines and Ferris wheels are safe. But there is no state requirement for an inspection to confirm that traveling equipment has been properly reassembled before children climb on board.

Authorities inspected the ferris wheel in Greene County back in June and found no violations, according to the reports.

A third-party inspector will determine what caused the auto to tip over and it’s now unclear when or if the rides were last inspected.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation assisted with the investigation for a time, but later said it was no longer assisting.

The owner of Family Attractions Amusements, Joshua Gene Macaroni, entered an “Alford plea” in the case as part of a plea deal, acknowledging there was enough evidence to convict him on a felony count of obstruction of justice, according to a news report in the Sun.
