Kidney racket: Hiranandani appoints E&Y for audit

With investigators planning to plumb deeper into the racket at the multi speciality hospital in Powai, a court on Friday had rejected the anticipatory bail pleas of two doctors in the case, after the arrest of five doctors.

“The Board of Trustees at Hiranandani Hospital have appointed Ernst & Young (E) to implement a stringent audit of the transplant cases conducted at the hospital”, it said in a statement.

The five LH Hiranandani Hospital doctors who were arrested on Tuesday evening for their alleged involvement in a kidney racket on August 9 was sent to judicial custody till August 26, reported ANI.

Public Prosecutor Sudhir Sapkal told the court that police investigations were complete and they did not require the custody of the accused for further investigations.

According to the police that the woman had professed to be his wife, only to be able to donate the kidney to Brijkishor Jaiswal. The application was filed two days after the Powai police arrested the CEO, medical director and three other doctors of the hospital for their involvement.

Hospital CEO Sujit Chatterjee, medical director Anurag Naik, Mukesh Shetye, Mukesh Shaha and Prakash Shetye, who were arrested on Wednesday, were sent to 14-day judicial custody by Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Bandra. The donor, Sunder Singh – whose role as an intermediary between the Hiranandani hospital and arrested agent Bhijendra Bhisen led to the unraveling of the current case – had posed as the recipient’s brother.

Meanwhile, a group of senior nephrologists and urologists in the city have chose to put on hold fresh kidney transplant cases till the government steps in to provide clarity on procedural intricacies involved in such surgeries.

Seeking bail for one of the accused, Prakash Shetty, his lawyer Abad Ponda said it must be granted immediately as his wife had delivered twins on Saturday morning and produced a certificate to the effect. Its not a protest but its out of fear.

“If our reservations are not considered seriously by the government, we will stop performing transplant procedures completely”, he said.
