Erdogan foe seeks international probe into Turkey coup

The foreign ministers meeting came a day after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russia’s Vladimir Putin met face to face for the first time since Turkey downed one of Moscow’s military planes over Syria.

The news follows a failed coup attempt in Turkey last month.

Meanwhile, Turkey’s state-run Anadolu news agency said authorities have issued a warrant for the arrest of former soccer star and legislator Hakan Sukur over his links to Gulen.

US officials have said that the United States has a formal process for dealing with extradition requests and that Turkey must provide solid evidence of Gulen’s involvement.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau said it was continuing to review the case.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said, however, that despite differences Turkey and Iran “would strengthen cooperation for a lasting peace in Syria”. Prosecutors had also demanded the arrest of Sukur’s father, the report said.

He repeated, however, Turkey’s demand that the USA extradite Gulen.

“The US administration planned a coup in Turkey through the Gulen terror organisation and tried to cause a civil war”, said Karagul who frequently travels with Erdogan on trips overseas, most recently to Russian Federation.

Yildirim said a US technical team would visit Turkey on August 22 to discuss legal issues relating to the possible extradition, according to Anadolu.

Sukur had three spells with Galatasaray for whom he scored a total of 295 goals in 545 games.

Vice President Joe Biden will visit Turkey on August 24, his office confirmed to CNN on Saturday.

“We stress the importance of Iran’s constructive role in providing a permanent solution in Syria from the beginning”, Cavusoglu said.

Sinan Ulgen, a former Turkish diplomat who heads the Edam think tank in Istanbul, said a “large majority of the Turkish population thinks that the United States are behind the attempted putsch”, with the same idea perpetuated in the press.

After retiring in 2007 he became an MP for the ruling AK party for two years from 2011 but resigned after a corruption investigation into senior government figures. “I have repeatedly condemned the coup attempt in Turkey and denied any knowledge or involvement”.
