Phelps, Lochte both qualify for 200-meter IM final

Ryan Lochte, one of the strongest swimmers alive, and teammate Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian in history, will face off in the 200 individual medley on Day 5 of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. “I am not coming back in four years”.

Lochte, a three-time Olympic medalist in this event, finished fifth with his time of 1:57.47.

Phelps has won more than twice as many gold medals at the Games as the athlete second on the list, former Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina (nine).

Racing against US teammate Ryan Lochte, Phelps posted a time of 1:54:66, pulling well away late and sealing his 22nd career gold medal and 26th overall.

He clinched silver in 2004 and 2012 and bronze in Beijing in 2008.

“Yeah it was alright, I feel like the swim wasn’t, it was good for my confidence but overall tomorrow is the main picture”, Schooling told Channel NewsAsia.

After apparently getting the two United States lanes mixed up the commentators calling the race believed Lochte was storming to victory.

“One last time! #USA #longjourney #12years”, he captioned the photo. He won his 22nd career gold medal Thursday night and broke a 2,168-year-old Olympic record with his 13th individual gold. Lochte’s time was 1:57.47, well off his world-record of 1:54.00 set at the 2011 World Championships.

Phelps couldn’t quite shake his pursuers though and, after Le Clos faded, Sakai threatened in the closing metres to draw level or even overtake him.

Ryan Lochte on Friday morning challenged his swimming rival and friend Michael Phelps to a rematch during the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
