Simone Manuel becomes first African-American woman to win swim gold
They have been making history – and here’s how.

She started swimming at a pool near her childhood home in Brooklyn, New York, where the other kids were mostly Chinese from her school located in Chinatown. For the next few decades, swimming role models were white, such as swimmer and actress Esther Williams, who was often featured in synchronized swimming scenes in elaborate Hollywood films. “Nor has building pools for black areas been a priority”.
In 1928, women’s gymnastics was added to the Olympic competition, however, the history of black Olympians in that sport has been “relatively short and recent”, according to Team USA. Correia became the first black woman to break an American record at the 2002 Women’s NCAA Championships.
The journalist and Ferlito both laughed over the racist remark.
“My Catholic faith is very important to me”.
Before Ledecky jumps in the water, she says a “Hail Mary”.
When Manuel and her Canadian counterpart came to the wall at the same instant, they set a new Olympic record of 57.20 seconds in that event. “This medal is for the people who come behind me and get into the sport”. “It’s like everything that has led me up to this moment has paid off, and it’s all been worth it”.
“My first gold medal, at my first Olympics, is kind of a surprise to me”, Manuel told reporters. “I’m still the same person”. “I just do my gymnastics”. In 2010, she experienced a turning point, being chosen for USA Swimming’s diversity select camp, where she met other talented minorities.
She shared top spot on the podium with Manuel, 20, the first African-American individual Olympic champion from the United States. Nationwide, blacks make up about 13% of the United States population.
“When we are in the same room it is very hard to have a conversation because we don’t know who is talking to which Simone”, Manuel said.
Golf will return to the Olympics for the first time since the 1904 St. Louis Games, when 46-year-old insurance salesman George Seymour Lyon of Canada won the title just eight years after first picking up a golf club. She finished 2.1 points ahead of Final Five teammate Aly Raisman, by far her largest margin of victory in her three-year – and counting – win streak. Join the list of first!
“It challenges me academically and athletically, and socially I get to be around such different people, though we also have something in common by being here”, Manuel told USA Swimming about attending Stanford. McClendon also retweeted a quote that she gave to the BBC in which she said of Manuel’s win, “a generation of black kids will consider swimming as a sport”.
The US star showed just why she’s the talk of town with another sublime showing to win gold in the women’s all-around final Thursday. Cullen Jones was the best known, having won two golds and two silvers at the last two Olympics.
The eyes of the world will be on gymnast Simone Biles on day 6 as the American chases a second gold medal in the women’s all-round, while golf returns to the Games after a 112-year absence.

Manuel, 20, who comes from Houston and attends Stanford University, is one of two African-American women who qualified for the US swim team – the other being Lia Neal who won a 4×100 freestyle relay bronze in Rio.
