In 2011 he was elected as an MP for Turkey’s Justice and Development Party (AKP) led at the time by the current Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Mevlut Cavusoglu, the foreign minister, told NTV television that a number of Turkish military attaches overseas supported the coup and some had even notified their embassies on the night of the failed coup that they were “in charge now”.

Mr. Erdogan has made public his displeasure at the United States refusing to extradite Fethullah Gulen, the US -based imam Mr. Erdogan considers responsible for last month’s failed coup attempt.

U.S. officials say the State and Justice Departments will give due consideration to the extradition request for Gulen and make any decision based on the evidence presented.

“There is an illegal organization and authorities are taking measures within the business world, the military, the police and the judiciary so that [coup attempt] can not happen again”, Kalin said.
