United Nations approves robust peace force in South Sudan

The United Nations on Friday (12 August) has approved a 4,000-member force in the South Sudan capital of Juba but in response the government said it would not cooperate with the world body. Russia, China, Egypt and Venezuela abstained.

Fighters from former First Vice President Riek Machar’s Sudan People’s Liberation Army-In Opposition fought government troops loyal to Kiir in clashes that threatened to reignite the war.

It commended the IGAD Plus for its continued leadership and unwavering commitment to the search for a sustainable resolution to the crisis in South Sudan.

The troops would be deployed to Juba, and are authorized to “use all necessary means, including undertaking robust action where necessary” to enforce their mandate.

Makuei also denies local media reports suggesting that President Salva Kiir has announced South Sudan would not cooperate with the United Nations following the resolution.

The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) has called for investigations to be held into criminal acts against civilians in South Sudan during the outbreak of the latest round of fighting.

He says as a child he saw things that no child should see, and now he hopes Prime Minister and the people of Canada can speak out and do something to help the people of South Sudan.

The protection force will be part of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan, known as UNMISS, in place since the country gained independence from Sudan in 2011.

Under the USA proposal, the regional force would report to the United Nations force that numbers more than 12,000 peacekeepers but has been criticized for not acting to protect civilians.

The council authorized UNMISS and the protection force until December 15, 2016. Last week, the government agreed to the force during a summit of the East African bloc IGAD.

It will also ensure the protection of Juba and the airport and “promptly and effectively engage any actor that is credibly found to be preparing attacks or engages in attacks”.

The UN mission has been criticized for failure to contain violence in South Sudan.

“Today we also had a chance to stop the violence by implementing an immediate arms embargo on South Sudan”.

USA deputy ambassador David Pressman he was aware of South Sudan’s reservations regarding the regional force.

Like Joyce and Masudio, the majority of the South Sudanese refugees in Uganda are women and children.

Machar, dubbed “prophet of doom” by president Kiir has never made any statement since he was replaced as vice president with Gai, according to the source.

The government in Kampala, a main ally of South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir, said the refusal to send troops was aimed at acquitting Uganda of accusations of interfering in the internal affairs of another country.
