Donald Trump has endorsed US House Speaker Paul Ryan, ending a four-day stand-off which exposed deeps chasms in the Republican party over the billionaire’s presidential candidacy.

But as the highest-ranking Republican in Washington, Ryan is hugely influential – something Trump has clearly recognised.
Nehlen said Friday that Trump’s decision “is appropriate and is a display of true leadership”. “He responded just as Mr Putin had calculated”.
Ryan himself said he hasn’t spoken to Trump since the GOP convention, has no plans to, and has no idea whether their differences are going to persevere through the campaign. “And very importantly, toward real change”, Trump said, reading off a prepared statement.

Trump needed a solid performance as recent state and national polling show he’s fallen behind Clinton by double-digits.
By attempting to mend fences with the GOP establishment, Trump made another attempt to pivot after a week dominated by internal struggles and Trump’s battle with the Muslim Khan family, whose son was killed in Iraq while serving in the US Army.
Republicans in the state say Trump will have to boost turnout beyond what Romney achieved in those populous, deep-red counties in the Milwaukee suburbs, and those are populated with Republicans that traditionally pose a challenge for Trump: Upper-middle-class, college-educated white voters.

Trump’s his initial refusal to back the three – and particularly his reluctance to endorse Ryan, an unprecedented move from a major party nominee – sparked fresh questions over Trump’s viability in the race.

Ryan, like other top Wisconsin Republicans, did not attend Trump’s evening appearance in their state.
