In the second set, the Romanian saved three break points to conjur a 6-4 win, to ultimately seal the tie and book her spot in the next round of the competition. “I tried to be aggressive and take the ball as soon as possible, because I know she has good defense”.

The 21-year-old Muguruza has risen to No. 9 after her run to the final at Wimbledon. And I also tried to play her forehand more, because she has a very strong backhand.

Halep, victor of three tournaments this season including Indian Wells, broke her veteran Serb opponent to open the second set and that was all she needed to clinch a well-deserved win. Muguruza lost to Serena Williams for the title after defeating four top-15 players at the All-England Club.

Following a month off since her last competitive match, Halep looked sharp as she opened the North American hardcourt swing by reaching the third round in Canada for the first time.

Tsurenko maintained that momentum at the start of the second set as she rattled off five successive games, before completing a 7-5 6-1 win and sealing Muguruza’s exit.

Wozniacki had only one ace and double-faulted 3 times as she dropped 7-5 to Swiss Belinda Bencic, 7-5.

“I had a long break at home, so it was difficult to come here and right away face one of the hardest players in the world, but I just did everything I could to win”.

Halep was joined in the third round by fifth seed Ana Ivanovic, a 6-4 7-6(4) victor over Belarusian qualifier Olga Govortsova, but it was otherwise a tough morning for seeds at the Aviva Tennis Centre.
