Tennis: Nick Kyrgios has provided this explanation following his x-rated sledge on Stan Wawrinka. Judging from video from Sports Net, it sounds like the second part of the comment was “sorry to tell you that, mate”.

Kyrgios had a walkover after Wawrinka retired injured, while trailing 0-4 in the third set – but earlier in the match, the brash young Aussie had viciously sledged the reigning Australian and French Open champion.

Kyrgios is believed to have been referencing Wawrinka’s rumored girlfriend, 19-year-old Croatian tennis player Donna Vekic.

Later, two-time Grand Slam victor Wawrinka took to Twitter to give his take on the Australian’s bluster.

“So disappointing to see a fellow athlete and colleague be so disrespectful in a way I could never even imagine”.

Kyrgios, who was presumably referring to his fellow Australian and Davis Cup team-mate Thanasi Kokkinakis, claimed later he had been provoked into making the comment during what was a heated contest.

Kyrgios: “You know, I thought, he was getting a bit lippy at me so I don’t know, it’s just in the moment sort of stuff, but yeah, I don’t really know, I just said it”.

“To stop [sic] so low is not only unacceptable but also beyond belief”.

Wawrinka added that the governing body should not stand for this kind of behaviour and rather for the integrity of the sport that the players are working hard to build.

After a 49-minute loss to Wawrinka at Wimbledon, Kyrgios said he had been sick all week.
