Today the Bills announced they have reached an agreement with New Era Cap Company on the naming right of their stadium.

It is not clear how New Era’s name will be incorporated into the name of the stadium or when the name change will take place.

Bills co-owner Kim Pegula tweeted out prior to Saturday night’s preseason opener against Indianapolis, “Proud to be partners with a hometown team”. It’s possible that Ralph Wilson’s name remains part of the marquee.

The team moved to its current home in Orchard Park, New York, in 1973, when it was named Rich Stadium after a Buffalo-based food-products company.

The people spoke to The Associated Press on Saturday on the condition of anonymity because the deal has not been an announced. That expired at the end of 1997, and the following year, the organization made a decision to honor Wilson, the Bills’ original owner, by naming the stadium after him.

New Era Cap Company, a Buffalo-based hat company who has a deal with the National Football League already, struck the deal with the team.

In 2013, Levi’s bought the naming rights to Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers, for $220 million over 11 years. Wilson passed away in 2014 and the team was sold later that year.
