In releasing the return – along with 10 years of tax information for her running mate, Virginia Senator Tim Kaine – Clinton’s campaign once again tried to create a contrast between her and Trump over transparency in their personal finances.
“Here’s a pretty incredible fact: there is a non-zero chance that Donald Trump isn’t paying *any* taxes”, Ms Clinton tweeted, minutes after releasing her own returns.
With Friday’s release, Clinton has now made available during the campaign her and her husband’s income taxes dating to 2007, showing a total adjusted gross income during that period of $US150 million.
Hillary Clinton is set to go after Donald Trump’s economic agenda, aiming to portray her rival’s approach as offering handouts for the rich that could imperil the economy.
Other significant sources of income included $3 million in book proceeds for Hillary, and $1.6 million for Bill’s consulting with GEMS Education, an worldwide education company, and Laureate Education, Inc., a for-profit education chain. “He is missing so much about what makes MI great”, Clinton said at Futuramic, an engineering company focused on supplying the aerospace industry. “There’s nothing to learn from them”, he said.
Clinton once called the TPP the “gold standard” of trade deals when she served as Obama’s secretary of state but announced her opposition to the deal a year ago, saying it did not meet her standard for creating jobs, raising wages and protecting national security.
According to their joint return, the Clintons made $10.6 million in 2015, significantly less than the almost $28 million they made the year before when the former secretary of state was still doing paid speaking engagements.
The Clintons are releasing their 2015 filings on Friday. The most recent return show that he and he wife, Anne Holton, earned $313,441 in 2015.
The campaign says the Kaines have donated 7.5 per cent of their income to charity over the last decade.
Officials for both the Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee said the session is the type of typical meeting that takes place in the middle of a presidential campaign with three months to go until the November 8 election. “What is he trying to hide?”, said Jennifer Palmieri.
Donald Trump has yet to release any of his tax returns, a practice not mandated for presidential candidates but one which every major-party nominee since the 1970s has done.
