Canadian commentator mixes up lanes, declares Lochte victor over Phelps

Meanwhile, Joseph Schooling from Singapore shocked the field by winning the gold in Olympic-record time (50.39).

He also created a new national record for himself as his previous personal best of 50.96 sec was clocked at the world championships a year ago, where he won a historic bronze medal. “I think so. I really think so, so Michael I’ll see you in Tokyo”. Phelps rival and team mate Ryan Lochte did not medal.

Phelps’ final event of the 2016 Rio Olympics – the 4x100m medley relay – will take place on Saturday, August 13. Lochte won gold in the 400-meter individual medley at the 2012 Olympics in addition to his silver at 200-meter.

A groin injury at the U.S. Olympic trials last month prevented him from qualifying in other individual races.

The victory landed Phelps his 26th career Olympic medal, and his 22nd gold – both Olympic records.

“Whenever I hear the national anthem there are so many memories always going through my head and pretty much every time I hear it I’m in tears”.

Michael Phelps wasn’t about to be stopped.

Racing against USA teammate Ryan Lochte, Phelps posted a time of 1:54:66, pulling well away late and sealing his 22nd career gold medal and 26th overall.

Phelps was sixth at the turn and Schooling – nearly exactly a decade younger than the 31-year-old American -wouldn’t let him pull off one of his patented comebacks on the return lap. “But at the same time I love a challenge, and that’s why I do the events that I do and going up against him is a challenge”.
