The honor of reaching the milestone was shared by Kathleen Baker, Lilly King, Dan Vollmer and Simone Manuel, who got to the wall first ahead of arch-rivals Australia.
Turning back the clock in his fifth and final Games, Phelps produced a blistering third leg of butterfly to restore his team’s lead and tee up victory after Britain’s Adam Peaty had threatened to gatecrash his party.
The U.S. claimed gold medal No. 1,000 with a win in the women’s 4×100-meter medley.
Her time fell just short of the Olympic record of 24.05 seconds set by Dutch swimmer Ranomi Kromowidjojo at the London 2012 Games.
Phelps captured five gold medals and one silver at these Games, including his fourth consecutive Olympic gold in the 200-meter individual medley and another gold in the 200-meter butterfly.

Breaststroker Cody Miller then set the stage for Phelps, before Nathan Adrian took Team USA home with his freestyle, earning the US – and Phelps – the final swimming gold medal of the 2016 Rio Games.
After posting the top time in both the preliminaries and the semifinals, Blume came through again on the final night of swimming at the Rio Games. Legends Mark Spitz and Carl Lewis (nine each) are next on the list, followed by swimmers Jenny Thompson and Matt Biondi and 1900-08 long, high and triple jumper Ray Ewry with eight golds each.
Paltrinieri pulled away from the field and was under world-record pace much of the race before fading a bit at the end.

Wilimovksy will get another shot at a medal in an even more demanding event – the 10-kilometer open water race at Fort Copacabana on Tuesday. At times during the last week, Phelps shook his head in disbelief at the stream of victories. “Tonight’s the last one”, Phelps said earlier Saturday during a Facebook Live broadcast.
