Singapore exploded in celebration Saturday after homegrown swimming hero Joseph Schooling beat United States legend Michael Phelps in the 100m butterfly in Rio to win the tiny republic’s first ever Olympic gold.
Phelps began the butterfly leg with the US in second position, but he set a blistering pace to give his team the lead by the end of his 100m.
At the Rio Games, Phelps won individual gold in the 200-meter individual medley and the 200-meter butterfly, while taking silver in the 100-meter butterfly.
“I’m excited to see just how much faster he can go”, he said, nodding at Schooling, who set an Olympic record in beating him. One night after his only setback in Rio, an upset loss to Joseph Schooling in the 100 fly, Phelps was back on top.
Phelps is also the most decorated Olympian of all time, with a total of 27 medals.
So. a world record and three golds in three events for the 21-year-old Murphy.

He won gold in an Olympic-record 50.39 seconds, leaving Phelps, Le Clos and Cseh in his wake.
Kathleen Baker, Lilly King and Dana Vollmer joined Manuel in the historic victory, which came with a time of 3:53.13.
