In July, Florida confirmed that the mostly mosquito borne virus had been transmitted locally on the us mainland for the first time.

A news release from the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) says the funding will be used to investigate illnesses, conduct mosquito surveillance and laboratory testing, support mosquito control and public health preparedness efforts and increase awareness of the Zika virus. There are a total of 499 travel-related cases in the state.

The CDC advises pregnant women not to travel to an area where active Zika transmission is ongoing, and to use insect repellent and wear long trousers and long-sleeved shirts if they are in those areas. A pregnant woman who was infected while traveling transmitted the virus to her baby, but the child appears to be healthy.

Some 4,000 students attend six schools in the Wynwood arts district where health officials say 22 people have contracted Zika, a mosquito-borne virus.

Zika infection during pregnancy may cause a serious birth defect of the brain called microcephaly and other severe fetal brain defects.

Florida now has 28 cases of non-travel-related Zika, a virus that spread rapidly across Latin America and the Caribbean.

“Anyone considering travel who is pregnant or trying to get pregnant should contact their health provider before leaving”, Ms. Aeschliman said.

HHS Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell said she will transfer $34 million from the agency to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and will also transfer $47 million to the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, or BARDA.

For male travelers, even if they do not develop Zika symptoms, they are urged to avoid sex or use condoms for at least two months after their return from an affected area.

So far there is no medicine or vaccine for the virus, and those infected are instructed to rest, drink fluids to prevent dehydration, not take aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and take acetaminophen (Tylenol) to reduce fever and pain. The Campbell County woman had recently traveled to a country with known, local Zika transmission and is not pregnant.

Although no locally-transmitted cases have yet been found in Louisiana, public health officials are on high alert to detect and report Zika virus cases as early as possible. Most people only experience mild symptoms.
