On his end, Garcia Padilla expressed his gratitude for the support given by the Administration of President Barack Obama, and added that “the threat of Zika to future generations of Puerto Ricans is evident, and I feel a responsibility to do everything that is within my reach to make sure we fight the spread of the virus”.
As of Thursday, there have been 205 confirmed cases of travel-related Zika infections in Canada.
Zika is a mosquito-borne virus that only causes mild, flu-like symptoms in most people. The virus can cause a transitory illness but is most risky to pregnant women, since maternal infection can trigger a serious birth defect called microcephaly.
The Wilmington News Journal reports that Dr. Karyl Rattay, director of the Delaware Division of Public Health, has said that local transmission is possible.
The previously marked zone north of downtown Miami is an area less than one-square mile. Zika has been shown to cause birth defects, including microcephaly, which causes severe developmental problems.
The virus is most seen in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Zika was first detected past year in Brazil, where it has taken its heaviest toll so far, and has spread rapidly through Latin America and the Caribbean.

Florida health officials have linked Wynwood to over two dozen Zika infections apparently spread by Miami mosquitoes. The CDC recommends pregnant women consider postponing travel to areas where Zika virus transmission is ongoing.
