More than 1000 people spent the night at Narita airport outside Tokyo because of the shutdown and, while flights were resuming on Tuesday, Delta spokeswoman Hiroko Okada said more delays are expected.

The airline is struggling to recover from an outage at its Atlanta headquarters early yesterday that brought a global meltdown of its booking and communications systems.

“We are still operating in recovery mode”, Dave Holtz, senior vice president of operations, said Tuesday.

Tuesday’s disruptions followed about 1,000 cancelations and 2,800 delayed flights on Monday.

The carrier, which with its affiliates accounts for about seven out of 10 flights at MSP, also delayed another 17 flights, said Patrick Hogan, an airport spokesman.

The airline is offering refunds to passengers on canceled or “significantly delayed” flights.

The largest US airlines – which account for about 85 percent of domestic air traffic – are required to report on-time performance for each flight to the government each month, and to disclose that information on their websites and to travel agencies.

Delta is keeping its flights leaving Killeen on time a day after the company cancelled nearly 1,000 flights with plans for more cancellations or delays due to a power outage Monday.

The airline posted a video apology by CEO Ed Bastian.

Delta said customers whose flights were canceled or delayed could get travel vouchers and be allowed through Friday to make a one-time change to the ticket without paying Delta’s usual change fee of $200 for domestic flights and up to $500 for worldwide flights. The company extended a travel waiver to customers traveling Tuesday.

Delta’s hub in Atlanta was the epicenter of problem flights on Tuesday, with lines that were much longer than the day before.

Delta’s utility provider Georgia Power blamed the failure of a switch gear at Delta HQ as the likely cause of the outage.

Travelers should check their flight status on Delta’s website or its app, and can rebook via the website, the airline said.
