The scoreboard replays the United States’ Katie Ledecky celebrating after she won gold in the women’s 800-meter freestyle at the Summer Olympics, during the seventh inning of a baseball game between the Washington Nationals and.
A stunner at the Rio Olympics: Michael Phelps was beaten.
Some athletes might’ve buckled under the pressure. She seems to operate on a tempo that other swimmers can’t fathom.
“I’m not going four more years and I’m standing by that”, he said.
Ledecky joined compatriots Janet Evans and Brooke Bennett as the only swimmers to win this event at two Olympics.
“I was absolutely delighted to see Anthony Ervin jump on that lane liner and win his gold after 16 years”.
“I’m happy”, Phelps said. “But joining Debbie in that history is incredible”.
It was Ledecky’s fifth gold in all as she successfully defended the title she won at London 2012, when she was 15.
She put the world on notice with another gold – and another world record – in the 400 free. Smith earned a gold medal as part of the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay.
“I hit all my goals right on the nose this week”, Ledecky said.
Last year, Bob Dorfman of Baker Street Advertising broke down her decision to go to college.
A few minutes later, Bethesda’s Katie Ledecky climbed her starting block for the 800 freestyle final, her last race of the 2016 Games and one in which she was expected to annihilate her world record.
“It feels like gold that I’m after her”, she said of Ledecky.
Eleven seconds. And finally, here came the second-place finisher, Great Britain’s Jazz Carlin – with a time, 8:16.17, that would have been a world record as recently as eight years ago but now was 11.38 seconds behind Ledecky – then the third, Hungary’s Boglarka Kapas.
While Phelps’ loss left the crowd in shock, Katie Ledecky restored some normalcy at the pool with another dominating performance, handily break the world record in the 800 freestyle.
The impression one gets is that if Ledecky kicked harder, if she did what her competitors are doing, it would only disrupt her mystifying propulsion. I’m finally believing in myself and stick to the race plan.
Brazil’s government declared a day of official mourning for a Rio Olympics police officer who died after being shot in the head making a wrong turn into one of the city’s slum.
