Obama also picked “Home” by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, indie rockers who incidentally were prominent campaigners for former Democratic presidential contender Bernie Sanders.

Kiwi musician Gin Wigmore has been included on President Obama’s summer playlist.

The White House released the president’s playlist Thursday during Obama’s family vacation on Martha’s Vineyard.

In the past, Obama has shared playlists with the public when he was running for election in 2008, when he was seeking reelection in 2012 and when he was being inaugurated for his second term in office.

For a full list of White House-curated playlists, including a classy holiday playlist curated by Vice President Joe Biden for last year’s winter season, we recommend subscribing to its page on Spotify.

As racially charged violence continues to plague the nation, America’s first black president packed “The Underground Railroad” by Colson Whitehead, a novel recounting a young slave’s harrowing journey toward freedom.

The daytime playlist kicks off with DC local Wale but also features some surprises. He listed “Elevator Operator” by Courtney Barnett, the Australian songwriter who has recently built a strong if niche following with her droll lyricism.

The full list of 39 songs is broken down into daytime and nighttime categories, and people can listen to numerous tracks on the Spotify streaming service.

Trust us when we say it gets hot in Washington, DC – today’s forecast calls for a heat index of 102°F – so anyone in the area is probably going to need these songs now more than ever to beat the heat.

The president’s playlist expresses an enthusiasm for breezy, jazz-influenced R&B from artists like Corinne Bailey Rae and Esperanza Spalding. In Franklin’s case, Obama put “Rock Steady” on this year’s daytime playlist – the same song he chose of hers in 2015.
