Defending champion Ranomi Kromowidjojo finished sixth in 24.19.

Denmark’s Pernille Blume wasn’t a medal favorite coming into the Games, but her top finishes in both the heats and semis forced everyone to take notice.

Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands, the gold medal victor in London four years ago, came sixth, one place ahead of the reigning world champion, Australia’s Bronte Campbell.

Dana Vollmer, who swam the third butterfly leg for the United States, was the only one in the race line-up to have also been in the 2012 winning quartet.

King, racing against Russian Yulia Efimova, whose doping past she spoke out about earlier in the week, pulled back to second with the Russians in front.
