Rio 2016 Olympic Games: Tori Bowie targets 100m success

Bowie’s decision to concentrate exclusively on sprinting and ditch the long jump paid off when she won 100m bronze at the world championships in Beijing a year ago. The former University of Southern Mississippi track star took silver Saturday in the women’s 100 meter dash. Bowie was second at 10.83, followed by two-time defending champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica, who ran a season-best 10.86.

“I’m extremely excited”, she said.

The 25-year-old won her 100m heat at the Olympic Stadium on Friday to raise hopes that she can add an Olympic medal to her collection this weekend. “I think we had to overcome so much and I think it’s making me a stronger individual”, Bowie said.

“So I’m right at two years in”, said Bowie, the 2015 world championships bronze medalist. “My next time around, I’ll be a real professional”.

And Bowie is among those predicting the women’s final will be one of the greatest ever 100m races. In the end, Bowie’s grandmother raised her in a small MS town.

But Bowie, who also goes in the 200m next week, is confident she stands a good chance if everything falls into place.

She has had a nagging issue with her confidence, however, and said part of the problem in the past has been a lingering feeling of insecurity about her ability. “It’s just fashion”, she said.
