Katie Ledecky Dominates in Final Race, Takes Fourth Gold In Rio

On the tennis court, Germany’s Angelique Kerber faces Monica Puig, who is looking for Puerto Rico’s first gold in any Olympic sport. It was the 45th straight Olympic win for the 4-0 Americans, who led by just two points after one period.

The United States women’s soccer team was eliminated by Sweden in the quarterfinals, a startling loss for the four-time Olympic champions that left Hope Solo without a shot at gold but with plenty of bitterness.

Phelps avenged his defeat at the 2012 London Games by winning the 200-meter butterfly on Tuesday night, holding off Japan’s Masato Sakai by a mere four-hundredths of a second.

– Maya Moore scored 12 points as the USA clobbered Canada 81-51 to clinch Group B in women’s basketball.

In the pool over the past week, 19-year-old Ledecky has done just that.

“He doesn’t cry very often and I don’t cry very often”, Ledecky said.

“I’m not going four more years and I’m standing by that”, he said. “The best team did not win today”.

The man who won eight golds at Beijing in 2008 has always come across as something of a medal machine.

Later, Solo tweeted: “Losing sucks”.

“It hasn’t really sunk in yet”, Schooling said.

“It felt faster than any event I had ever done before”, Ledecky said, “so I was pretty confident that I would be under that world record time”.

UNIDENTIFIED MAN: Take your marks. There’s not too much warmth between the two sides since the 2014 World Cup, where Colombia’s Juan Camillo Zuniga kneed Brazilian star striker Neymar, fracturing his back. Schooling’s time in the 100m butterfly represented a new Olympic record, the Singaporean taking that honour from Phelps.

At the long distances – 800m and 1500m – there has never been anybody like her. Kyrie Irving scored 15 points for the Americans, who didn’t lock up their 48th consecutive worldwide victory until Bogdan Bogdanovic missed a 3-pointer from the left wing with two seconds left. Cameramen covering the event did not even have her competitors in the frame.

Day 7 of the Rio Games features a heavy slate of medal action in swimming, track and field, track cycling, fencing, judo and more.

The Welsh swimmer added 800m freestyle silver to her 400m freestyle medal after being beaten again by record-breaking American Katie Ledecky. She is also likely to compete in the women’s 4×100 medley relay.

At least seven sprinters are in the mix to be crowned the fastest woman in the world as the 100 meter final takes place at Rio’s Olympic Stadium. Johnson was two games away from wrapping up the match in the third set.

Others to watch include Elaine Thompson of Jamaica, Murielle Ahoure of the Ivory Coast, Dafne Schippers of the Netherlands and Americans English Gardner, Tianna Bartoletta and Tori Bowie.

The U.S. holds the world record, at 3:52.05 – a time that the American team clocked at the London 2012 Games. American Justin Gatlin is considered the best threat to stop him.

Ledecky closed out her Rio trip with a bang, shattering her own world record in the 800-meter freestyle Friday night. I just continued to set goals.

The first day of track and field yielded a couple firsts for the United States: Michelle Carter is not only the first female American to take gold in the shot put, but she and her father Michael (who won silver in 1984 before embarking on an National Football League career) are the first-ever father-daughter team to capture individual-event track and field medals. “I had so much fun this week”. “But joining Debbie in that history is incredible”.

Katie Ledecky set a new world record Friday in the women's 800-meter freestyle. In the pool she celebrated with Team USA teammate Leah Smith
