EPIC: United States win 1000th Summer Olympic gold medal at Rio

As Nathan Adrian touched the wall to finish off the victory, Phelps gathered the other relay swimmers – backstroker Ryan Murphy and breaststroker Cody Miller – in his arms.

And although teammates Lilly King, Kathleen Baker and Dana Vollmer had all won Olympic medals before, they celebrated excitedly among themselves as Manuel moved further clear of the field.

He departs the scene with a total of 28 Olympic medals culled across five games, beginning in Sydney 16 years ago.

“It’s really special”, Manuel said. “I just opened my mouth”.

American Jeff Henderson took the long jump gold medal by overtaking Luvo Manyonga of South Africa by one centimeter on his last jump.

The IU swimming and diving program now has won 69 medals in Olympic history, including 39 gold. Puig is ranked 34th and is the first unseeded women’s singles gold medalist since tennis returned to the Olympics in 1988. But the 19-year-old American already proved she can soar with astonishing tumbling routines that won the all-around title.

Standing atop the medal podium for the 23rd time, listening the “The Star-Spangled Banner” as he has done so many times before, Phelps teared up a bit and gave a little nod.
