Saturday’s attack was the first of its kind in Switzerland, but local police source has declined to confirm any terrorism links to the attack, saying that the investigation is still underway.

The attack occurred Saturday afternoon as the train neared the station in Salez, close to the Liechtenstein border.

Several dozen passengers were on board at the time of the attack.

We’ll keep an eye on this and let you know if anything changes in terms of the knifeman’s motive or if there are any casualties. He said the suspect and one victim were in critical condition.

Seven people including the suspected attacker were admitted to hospital with burn and stab wounds, the statement said.

Some of the injuries are reported to be serious.

Kruesi said so far police have found no indications the man had ties to extremist groups. Before fleeing attempt and getting shot and killed by police he stabbed a woman too.

“The results are part of a criminal proceeding and are therefore not public”, the police statement said.

Almost 300 people in Europe have died in terrorist attacks over the last two years.

In France, Mohamen Lahouaiej Bouhlel, a 31-year-old Tunisian national, drove a white truck at high speed into crowds gathered along the promenade in Nice to watch fireworks marking the French national day on July 14, killing 85 people.

In November 2015, a coordinated “jihadist” attack claimed by IS in Paris left 130 people dead.

Previous year a heavily armed gunman opened fire on a high-speed Amsterdam to Paris train but was overpowered by two young American soldiers and their companion.

The train in which a man attacked other passengers stands at the station in Salez Switzerland on Saturday Aug. 13 2016. Police in Switzerland say a Swiss man set a fire and stabbed people on a train in the country's northeast wounding six people
