Tyrod Taylor: Bills sign Tyrod Taylor to 6-year, $92M deal

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) The Buffalo Bills have placed their faith in quarterback Tyrod Taylor by signing him to a contract extension. The deal was announced as six years and $92 million, but as we know, National Football League contracts are never that cut and dry.

The Taylor extension is about much more than years and dollar amounts for Bills’ players.

Taylor served as Joe Flacco’s backup with the Baltimore Ravens for his first four seasons, before signing with the Bills in free agency in March 2015.

The story has a familiar ending though, as far as National Football League quarterbacks go: Taylor got paid a ton of money from the Buffalo Bills. In 14 starts last season, Taylor threw for 3,035 yards, with a 63.7 completion percentage and 20 touchdowns to just six interceptions.

GM Doug Whaley had been saying since the end of last season that while the team would like to extend Taylor, the passer had more yet to prove on the field before the club would reward him with a mega-deal.

“I feel great about him”, Ryan told USA Today last week.

If Taylor can keep up his dual-threat ways, he will be worth every penny that his new contract is dishing out. He also ran 568 yards and five touchdowns.

“In order to take those steps it has to come from the player”, Roman said via the team’s website.

Now that the Bills have extended Taylor to a long-term deal it leaves them to focus on negotiations with cornerback Stephon Gilmore. “He came here, and he earned the starting job, so it was all him”. If Taylor performs poorly, they get out after this year, and just have to re-start the QB search process. If last season was any indication, and if Taylor can stay healthy for an entire year, then Buffalo has finally found its man. Roman added, “Having that experience, we’re able to prepare him very specifically, like attack our weaknesses which we didn’t do so well previous year, so that is huge”.

Taylor becomes the latest candidate to fill what has been an unsettled position in Buffalo since Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly retired after the 1996 season.
