Louisiana rain called historic

A woman and her dog were saved from Louisiana floodwaters thanks to some men on a boat who arrived in the nick of time.

The woman’s convertible was nearly fully underwater when the men arrived and broke a window to free her, WAFB reported.

One of those rescues was caught in an intense video released by The Associated Press. The footage shows her being pulled from under the water by one of the men, and immediately she cries out for her dog. Upon finding the vehicle, a boater carried out an intense save of its driver-and her dog-once it sank.

Lyn Gibson described hacking away at a hole near the roof of her two-story house as floodwaters swallowed it.

Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) declared a state of emergency in Louisiana on Friday, and numerous state’s parishes have urged their residents to evacuate.

Edwards said more than 1,000 Louisiana National Guard troops have been deployed to assist rescue efforts, a number that will likely swell to 1,200 by Sunday.

Browning said the area is sparsely populated and authorities only came across the truck after earlier successfully rescuing the driver of an 18-wheeler whose rig was pushed off the roadway.

Light rain and mist is expected to continue through the evening hours on Saturday with temperatures remaining in the 70s and 80s area-wide.Rain chances should taper off some through the overnight hours, but more rainfall is expected on Sunday.

Shanita Angrum, 32, said she called 911 on Friday morning when she realised flood waters had trapped her family in their home.

The rain battered the parishes around Baton Rouge and is expected to move west, he said at a news conference Saturday.

Both Edwards and the Governor of MS declared a state of emergency.

Only large National Guard vehicles have been able to get into and out of town, Martin said.

Shelters have been opened for those fleeing their homes.

“I’m continuing to pray for everyone who’s impacted by this storm, and we I’ll continue to be a resource for as long as it takes to get folks back on their feet”.

John Mitchell, 23, said he swam to safety with his pit bull after police officers in a boat picked up his 20-year-old girlfriend, Haybriel Thomas; her 1 year-old daughter, Kaylee; and Mitchell’s father. “That’s how fast that water was coming in”, she said.

“No, she better not be”, the woman says.
