Robert Pattinson, Dane Dehaan unravel the ‘Life’ of James Dean

Anton Corbijn, the director behind the lens of projects as varied as A Most Wanted Man and George Clooney’s The American, is tackling a real-life biopic for his latest feature Life, which has today revealed its first full-length trailer. Instead Chronicle’s Dane DeHaan will be the one slipping into Dean’s shoes. DeHaan is probably best known for playing Harry Osborn in The incredible Spider-Man 2, andhaving starred alongside Daniel Radcliffe in 2013’s Kill Your Darlings. In a nod to Corbijn’s own past experience, the film is told from the perspective of the Life photographer Dennis Stock (played by Pattinson) who meets and profiles Dean (DeHaan) for the magazine, turning out some of Dean’s most iconic photographs. Compare, for instance, Dean’s popped coat color and cigarette look, which appears at the beginning and end of the trailer, to this image.

The movie garnered mixed reviews when it played at the Berlin Film Festival in February. While Variety called it an “engaging, elegiac portrait of a legend in the making”, The Hollywood Reporter argued that the movie “doesn’t deliver on its considerable promise”.

U.S. audiences won’t be able to decide for themselves just yet: Life is now without an official stateside release date, although rumor has it the film may come out on September 30, the 60th anniversary of Dean’s death. Check out the trailer below.
