Now that she’s achieved her medal dream, she said she was not tempted to train for another Olympics and that Rio would be her last.

Ota takes silver in his Olympic debut, a nice achievement for the 22-year old. “I had a little too much adrenaline”. “I didn’t know he was (practicing) the proposal”.

Cook missed her second dive, a front 3 1/2 pike in which she starts back on the board instead of at the edge. “Sometimes you miss and sometimes you hit. I had a really strong finish, and I’m proud of myself for sticking it out”.

Her quest for the bronze medal, however, looked uncertain at certain times on Sunday as she faced strong competition from Abel before she finally came up out on top in her final dive and finished with a 5.55 point advantage.

The eventual gold medallist and double world champion wasn’t completely satisfied with her performance, however, claiming she would “probably score myself 80 out of 100 because my scores were not that stable and my performance was not that stable”.

“This morning in his room he was reciting something and I didn’t notice (what it was)”.

Shi, 24, made a clean sweep of her 2016 Olympic events, taking gold in both the synchronized 3m with partner Wu Minxia last Sunday and taking gold in the this Sunday’s individual event exactly one week later. Minixia was the gold medal victor in this event during the 2012 London Olympics, though she did not participate in it in Rio. The 26-year-old Duke medical student was recently engaged and plans to retire following the Olympics.

The following divers advanced to Sunday’s 3pm final: Shi Tingmao (CHN), He Zi (CHN), Jennifer Abel (CAN), Maddison Keeney (AUS), Abby Johnston (USA), Yan Yee Ng (MAS), Tania Cagnotto (ITA), Olena Fedorova (URK), Pamela Ware (CAN), Esther Qin (AUS), Grace Reid (GBR), Nora Subschinski (GER). Her score of 387.90 was better than the 379.20 she posted to take the silver medal in 2012.

China maintained its 28-year streak of dominance in the women’s individual 3m springboard event, which it has won at every Olympics since 1988 – eight straight victories.

The adjacent synchronised swimming pool at the Maria Lenk Aquatic Centre had been pumped out and replaced overnight.

Shi also admitted she had “never seen anything like” the green water in the diving pool, which organisers have admitted is an “embarassing” problem.
